Boycott Title

racial profiling and discrimination while shopping at Home D

Boycott Description

Mike Lewis PO Box 4582 Annapolis, MD 21403   December 15, 2010 Hello everyone,   It’s me Mike Lewis again and a year ago I came to you telling you to not shop at Loews Home Improvement because they discriminate against minorities, I told you to support your local mom and pop shops and Home Depot.  Sadly to say, that on November 21, 2010 I was at the Home Depot in Bowie MD making a purchase at the self check out that for some reason was not working, so the cashier next to the self check out said she would take me.   My purchase was $54 and after the cashier rang me up she asked me if it was cash or credit and I said credit.  The cashier then said she needed to see my ID and I asked why?  She said the store policy was that any credit card purchases required ID because she said they have had a lot of people using credit cards that were not authorized and she said it came from the store manager that told her to do this check.   Once again, I told her that if it’s a policy it needs to be written down and displayed like it is in the liquor stores.   I refused to show my ID but she saw something in my wallet with my name on it and let the transaction go through.  She assured me that she would talk to her store manager and let the manager know that it needs to be a written policy for all to see. When I called the store the next day and talked to the store manager and the District manager, I was told it was NOT a policy to check ID for credit card purchases unless the credit card is not signed.  After a weeks of dealing with this issue, I was told by the Home depot district manager and corporate headquarters that the reason I was questioned for an ID was because I was purchasing paint.  However this excuse that Home Depot is trying to tell me was NOT what I was told by the cashier at the time I was harassed and humiliated for my ID because she thought I might be a thief, NOT because I was buying paint!  I let Home Depot know that I was harassed, humiliated and discriminated not because I was buying paint, but because I was a black male.  What I wanted from Home Depot was a written apology and to discuss this matter with Frank Blake the CEO of Home Depot to let him know that his employees need to be trained to NOT pick and choose who they will discriminate against in his stores.   When I sent all this information to Frank’s office, they had only African American employees to call me and try to make excuses for what happened and I was told that Frank would never talk to me concerning this matter, even though it was a matter of discrimination he was too important and busy to concern himself with this matter.   What I want you to do is to contact Frank and let him know that it is 2010 and we will NOT put up with this type of treatment in his or anyone else’s store.  Discrimination must be wiped out and Home Depot and Frank Blake the CEO of Home Depot needs to be held accountable because our African American money is as green as anyone else’s.  I am going to put this incident on boycott.com, consumerist.com and pissedoffconsumer.com to let others know about the racial profiling and discrimination while shopping at Home Depot. Here is Frank Blake the CEO of Home Depots telephone number 770-433-8211  ext 15659 and
you can also email [email protected] to let him know we will not stand for discrimination of any form.     Sincerely, Mike Lewis ([email protected])

He's right & crybabies are wrong

ID is NOT required unless the back of the card isn't signed. All of you crying about the race card issue should try and walk a mile in his shoes first. All of you crybabies should go back to Ireland or Germany or Italy or Whitetrash land and stop being an ignorant Fox "news" stooge.

Hi, sorry to hear you think you were being discriminated. I used to work self checkout sometimes and I will tell you when you are buying paint as soon as you scan the paint the terminal will make a loud beep and will start flashing red at the cashier. They have to check your ID to verify your 18. She probably didn't realize what it was beeping for but she was just doing her job.

Corporate attitude

Facts: they are following you as you entered in a Home Depot or other corporations. I know it by first hand, especially if a black man enters in a Home Depot, you are become a suspect as a criminal. Many Home Depot employees or hidden people will follow you who dress up as a regular customer. First of all as you appeared in the store they are will check you in their database, your background, if you are employed by someone, if not than you will be criminated by them.

If some reasons they are hate you, like to bring you down, than they will criminate you till they kill you as they already done it with many middle aged or seniors. They are very high skilled criminals who built up a corporate network for it.

Home Depot asking for I.D. to use Debit card

I attempted to purchase some items today at a Home Depot in Phoenix, AZ yesterday. The black cashier wanted to see my I.D. so I could use my well funded debit card. After quickly showing her that I in fact had I.D. that matched my debit card I walked out without completing the transaction. Geez... it isn't easy being white in America. I'm kidding about it being racial. It is bad manners on the cashiers part to ask for I.D. on a debit card. Annoys me to be treated like a low life. Home Depot corporate take notice?

purchase over $25 requires signature

You do understand that a credit card purchase over $25 requires a signature, right?

so why are you surprised when asked for an ID when making a purchase over $25?

They are not racist, YOU ARE!

get over yourself

Maybe if minorities where not involved with some many scams they would not have to profile. Maybe it's your brother and sisters you should be mad at.

Ignorance Is Bliss. - 5/2/11 9:10 AM

Ignorance Is Bliss.

Mr. Lewis is justified in his outrage.  I understand his concern because merchants try to do this to me, too.  Are you people aware that merchants sign agreements with Mastercard and VISA that specifically state that they are not supposed to ask for secondary ID from customers?  There are some exceptions and special cases - if the card is unsigned, if the purchaser is buying controlled substances (such as paints, alcohol, etc) or if the product purchased is being shipped to an address.

Otherwise, as customers, you did not sign any agreement authorizing merchants to indiscriminately force you to show personal and confidental infomation (driver's license, etc) to a stranger (the clerk), which could very well compromise your identity.  Incidentally, if you have a Sam's Club card, did you know that you DID sign an agreement that allows Sam's to check your receipt as you go out the door?  Do you know that you did NOT sign any agreement to allow Wal-Mart or Best Buy to check your receipt before you can leave the store?  Read the fine print - know you rights, Americans.

For those of you who think that this unauthorized practice of demanding secondary ID to complete a credit card transaction is a good thing, fine.  But please understand that you give up your personal information because you want to, not because you have to.  This practice allows clerks to decide whether or not you look like you should have a credit card.  In other words, whether or not you look honest.  This is wrong.  If the card is properly signed and is current, and is not rejected by the network (a clerk will know this), and you are not purchasing items that require identification, you should not be questioned about your identity.

I don't need some stranger (the clerk) trying to protect my credit card from theft.  That's not the clerk's job.  If the card is actually stolen there are effective procedures in place to deal with that situation.  The procedures do not include me having to prove that I own the card that I am trying to use.

This IS a big deal.  Regardless of race or anything else, it seems that Americans give up their precious liberties so easily.   As a decorated combat Vietnam veteran, a patriot, an active volunteer in my community, and a law abiding citizen, I should not have to prove to anyone that I did not steal the credit card that I am trying to use to do business with a merchant.  And, the answer is NOT to take my business elsewhere if I don't like the "store policy".  The answer is for the store to comply with the agreement it signed with the credit card issuer and stop subjecting its customers to this unnecessary invasion of their privacy.

Racist?

Since when is checking an ID card raciest?  I'm white and I'm asked for my ID occasionally when using a charge card.  Remove the chip off your shoulder and move on.

Get Over It

I think you're being ridiculous. BTW - I'm not racist; I'm a minority also and have experienced *real* discrimination. I'm sure you have, too, but this doesn't sound like an instance of that. You know those people who complain that minorities are always "drawing the racism card"? Your behavior that you explain here is the reason for that.

It was for YOUR protection that she asked for your ID. What if your card was in the hands of a thief and they tried to use your ID? I bet you'd be really mad and try to blame them ALSO if they DIDN'T check the ID and let a thief make a $50 something dollar purchase with YOUR card. How can you say this is racist?? You're *really* going out on a limb with this one - it's like you're *looking* for someone to be racist against you. Not every move against you is *racist*.

Take a chill pill and next time just show your ID - it's not a big deal and you should actually be thankful for it and I hope it happens more often! I'm always glad to show my ID for a purchase of credit when asked.
